Plug into Care: Supporting Family Caregivers This November

November is National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM), a time to honor and support the millions of people who provide care to loved ones. This year’s theme, Plug-in to Care, emphasizes the importance of connection, helping caregivers access trusted resources, tools, and community support.

At CaringTide, we understand the challenges caregivers face. We are committed to providing guidance and resources to help families thrive while caring for loved ones with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD/DD).

Connect with Resources

Caregivers don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Some valuable resources include:

Prioritize Your Well-Being

Caregiving can be both rewarding and physically and emotionally demanding. Research and clinical guidance, including insights from the Cleveland Clinic and the Parkinson’s Foundation, highlight the importance of recognizing burnout early and taking proactive steps:

Signs of Caregiver Burnout

  • Persistent fatigue or sleep disturbances
  • Irritability or mood changes
  • Anxiety, depression, or feelings of hopelessness
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or stomach problems

Strategies to Prevent Burnout

  • Take Breaks & Respite Care: Short periods away from caregiving can recharge your energy.
  • Build a Support Network: Join support groups, connect with peers, or lean on family and friends.
  • Practice Self-Care: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques like meditation.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: Delegate tasks when possible and accept that caregiving isn’t about perfection.
  • Seek Professional Help: A mental health professional can provide coping strategies and emotional support.

Celebrate and Acknowledge Your Role

Caregivers often put their own needs last, but taking time to reflect on accomplishments, acknowledge your effort, and celebrate small wins is essential. Sharing your story can inspire and connect you with others in the caregiving community.

Takeaway

This National Family Caregivers Month, let’s honor the invisible work, the daily challenges, and the love that caregivers give. By connecting with resources like CAN, using CaringTide’s 7 Foundations, and actively caring for your own well-being, you can thrive in your role while supporting your loved ones.

Remember: You are not alone. Support is available, and every step you take to care for yourself strengthens your ability to care for others.
